IIT Madras researchers develop new touchscreen technology that lets you feel the texture of images.
Researchers at IIT Madras have created a new touchscreen display technology that allows users to feel the textures of images as their fingers move across the touch surface. Existing touchscreens can only sense your location of finger touch.
It is the next generation in touch display technology, known as 'iTad,' which stands for interactive touch active display. A built-in multitouch sensor monitors finger movement, and surface friction is modified by software. The technology has the potential to elevate the online purchasing experience. 'iTad' has several significant applications, including automotive, consumer electronics, and digital signage. The Touchlab prototype can be turned into a product in a year. Around 30% of internet shopping returns are due to a mismatch in customer experience.
